It is thrilling to have been elected to a three-year term as a national director and I am especially proud to have this opportunity to represent my Chapter at the national level.

It was just two years ago that I relocated to Cape Cod from Cincinnati and from the Ohio Valley Chapter to NECMA. When I arrived on the Cape I was very appreciative of the calls I received from NECMA managers welcoming me to the Chapter. At the time, I made the decision to focus on my new job and wait until my first season was over before becoming an active participant in NECMA. I must share with you that this was a poor decision and my advice to anyone relocating and transitioning to a new job is to get immediately involved in their CMAA Chapter!

I started attending Chapter meetings in September of my first year in New England and immediately felt more comfortable and confident as I started to interact with my new Chapter friends – a group that I quickly discovered to be wicked smart and willing to share their extensive knowledge of this wonderful corner of the United States.

Little did I know that a few months later I would be nominated by the CMAA Board of Directors to complete the second year of my fellow countryman and Chapter member Stephen Downes three-year term and be asking my new Chapter to support me in running for election for my own three-year term in 2010.

NECMA President Ric Shultz moved fast to put the wheels in motion and before I knew it a committee was formed and Peter Trombetta had generously agreed to contribute his considerable talents as campaign manager. I never felt more fortunate in my life.

I am so grateful to Ric Schultz for getting my campaign so quickly in place and to our 2010 President Barry Stacer for keeping it there. I was truly humbled and appreciative of the encouragement and support of the NECMA Board of Directors and NECMA Past President’s Council. Everyone deserves a special mention but I must give a special thanks to Paul Lazar for creating the campaign slogan "...still learning"… a simple phrase that captured my personal passion for CMAA so well. Drew Ford was the creative one who conceived the collegiate, bespectacled logo and I think just about everyone on the team pushed me into producing the YouTube clips!

It is impossible to express the depth of my gratitude to Peter Trombetta for pulling me into the 21st Century with a truly electronic campaign. Peter provided invaluable help with my Chapter visit schedule and was always available with the best advice and guidance whenever I asked for it! I hope he is not too dismayed that I am chairman of the Technology Committee this year! Thank you Peter!

This first part of the journey has been quite a thrill and it is now time for me to serve our wonderful association in the best way I possibly can. I look forward to hearing from you all and I hope you will always let me know whenever there is something I can do to help.

Thanks again and very best wishes,

Peter

Peter C. Davies, CCM
Wianno Club, Osterville, MA.

PETER DAVIES, CCM ELECTED TO CLUB MANAGERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Peter Trombetta
(774)430-9050
Davies4Director@necma.org
PETER DAVIES, CCM ELECTED TO CLUB MANAGERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA BOARD OF DIRECTORS
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA -- February 13, 2010 -- Peter C. What a Gift!

The Holidays are a joyful time of year but after a long build-up they always seem to be over in a flash. After months of talking about Santa, our kids had opened every gift from under the tree and by 7:30AM we were all in a glazed state, knee deep in wrapping paper and suffering from bad cases of sleep deprivation!

Ever since my first CMAA World Conference in San Antonio in 2002, I have found that the post holiday blahs have been replaced by eager anticipation of the upcoming conference. Metaphorically, conference is the gift my club puts under the tree for Peter, the professional club manager! Thank you Wianno Club!

I enjoy opening my conference gift slowly, savoring every moment as bit by bit I open the proceedings manual and view all the education that will be available, learn about the host city and envision the fun I will have meeting old friends, making new friends and learning something from them all. Then comes the actual excitement of getting to the conference, picking up the energy vibe as thousands of managers gather together in the pursuit of excellence. I can’t leave the metaphor without mention of the brilliant team of national elves that makes this all happen and I think we all know who Santa Claus is!

The best thing about the conference gift is that it truly is the gift that keeps on giving! We return home to our clubs enriched by our experience, overflowing with all the new ideas we have learned, begged, borrowed or stolen and fully energized to make a difference in our homes, clubs and communities! Wow! Thank you CMAA!

Peter C. Davies, CCM
General Manager
Wianno Club
P.O.Box 249
Osterville MA 02655
508-681-4900

Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man. ~Benjamin Franklin

<img width='1' height='1' Davies, CCM
The Wianno Club
Osterville, MA
YEAR JOINED CMAA: 1997

In extraordinary times, status quo has become a thing of the past as we turn ourselves upside down to face the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing world – even clubs established more than 100 years ago are finding the need to evolve at a rapid pace that, until recently, would have seemed unimaginable. Now is the time to look beyond our personal stake and include the very future of private clubs and the club management profession in our thinking. CMAA is the greatest champion for our profession and for our industry, and there has never been a time or a greater need to provide support to our Association than now.

Where would we be without CMAA? For me it was thanks to the opportunities offered by CMAA that my initial stumble into the world of private clubs was transformed into a wonderful new life. It has been great to be able to give back by serving my chapters and participating on national committees. It is such an honor to currently serve as a national director and to work with a dynamic group of peers and the extraordinary staff at our national headquarters. This experience has intensified my resolve to serve my Association and its membership and continue to contribute in every way I possibly can.

This year, Shelly and I will celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary and count our many blessings – especially our three children. That said, life balance is the toughest thing in a profession that places so many demands on our lives. In all honesty, I haven’t come close to finding the perfect balance in my life, I haven’t found a magical formula to fix all the bumps in the road but I’m still trying, still listening and thanks to CMAA: still learning.

I respectfully ask you to support my continued service as a national director. Our Association is strong because of its remarkable membership. I promise to always keep listening and keep learning from you because, after all, we are all the leaders we have been waiting for.

CHAPTER ACTIVITIES: Ohio Valley Chapter Board of Directors 2001-2007; President/Immediate Past President, 2006/2007; Vice President 2005; Secretary-Treasurer, 2004; Director, 2002-2003; Cincinnati District Chairman, 2001.

NATIONAL ACTIVITIES: National Director, 2009; Career Services Committee Co-Chair, 2009; Chapter Member Services Committee, 2007/2008; Premier Club Services Committee, 2005/2006.

CONFERENCES ATTENDED: 7 World Conferences and 5 Leadership/Legislative Conferences.

WORKSHOPS ATTENDED: 22

EXPERIENCE AS A CLUB MANAGER: The Wianno Club, Osterville, MA, General Manager, 2008–Present; Heritage Club, Mason, OH, General Manager, 2000–2008.

OTHER EXPERIENCE: Four Bridges Country Club, Liberty Township, OH, Club Manager, April-September 2000; Heritage Club, Mason, OH, Clubhouse Manager, 1999-2000; Ivy Hills Country Club, Cincinnati, OH, Various Positions, 1994-1999; Actor and Waiter (New York and Cincinnati),1984–1993; RCA Records and Personal Management, 1975-1983; Actor (London), 1970-75.

EDUCATION: Central School of Speech & Drama, London; Bishops Stortford College, Hertfordshire, U.K.

OTHER ACTIVITIES: CMAA International Wine Society Member since 2000; Member of the United Methodist Church, Osterville, MA.

Published by CMAA: http://www.cmaa.org/template.aspx?id=23748

ONLINE VOTING NOW OPEN

CMAA Opens Online Voting for Board of Directors Positions.

Eligible voting CMAA members* who will be casting their votes for Secretary-Treasurer and Board of Directors positions for the 2010 elections may do so via online authorization, absentee or on-site in San Diego, CA. Paper ballots are no longer sent. The exception will be for eligible voting members who do not have access to a computer. If you are among that group, simply call the National Headquarters and a staff member will send you a hard copy "voting authorization" of what is online.

When you register online to vote, if you're authorized as an eligible voter, you will be issued a random voting registration number. Once your vote is "cast" using this unique code, the process is complete and closed. Similar to utilizing VotePoint at Conference, your online vote remains confidential. In other words, how you voted in the election cannot be traced back to your membership ID. Please note that you will be unable to change your vote once it is cast.

2. Absentee Voting

If you are attending Conference but will be unable to vote during the two days allocated, you may vote absentee and may collect your ballot at the Credentials Verification Desk in San Diego.

3. My first club jobs were in Cincinnati and my first association position was as Cincinnati District Chair. It was great to drop in on the OVC’s Annual Meeting and be there for my good friend Kevin O’Laughlin’s installation as Chapter President. Additionally, old friends Dave Brown and Marcus Blum were completing their board service and friends who were just getting involved with the Chapter just before I left for New England were moving on to the board as our new leaders.

CMAA is so much about relationships and there’s no better way to remember that than paying a visit to one’s previous Chapter.

CMAA CEO James B. Singerling opened the Chapter’s three day mini-conference with a State of the Industry address. He emphasized that challenging times make education essential and encouraged us to educate our Boards on the huge role CMAA plays in this regard. The tremendous education and networking opportunities provided by the CMAA World Conference are now properly described and promoted as CMAA University 2010.

Recognizing the demanding nature of the club management profession, Mr. Singerling encouraged us not only to arrive at our clubs with a great attitude but to tune out the difficulties of the day and arrive home with a great attitude as well; ready to share all the good things that happened. Mr. Singerling’s remarks reminded me that life balance remains a huge challenge for most of us and needs to be consciously addressed – it’s not something that will ever fix itself. We help create strategic plans for our clubs – perhaps it’s time to create strategic plans for ourselves.

For the remainder of the day we enjoyed a Vendor Show and Chef’s Competition followed by a round table discussion with chefs and managers. Participants reported that volume has stayed the same but check averages have dropped resulting from an increased demand for lower priced items. Many clubs have offered some amazingly low priced features to keep their members coming to the Club. Examples included a small filet with homemade French fries and a glass of wine for $10, $3 burger madness with a toppings bar and comfort foods such as lamb shank or Osso Bucco for $12-$15 including a dessert! The general consensus: we need to find creative ways to keep our members coming to the club, especially in the current challenging times.

Peter Davies at his first New England Chapter meeting (October 2008).

<img $r="true" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_turhg2f66ZU/Ss1iwvrbQvI/AAAAAAAAAM8/BBNNoO7tU3Q/s200/davies_oct_08_1.jpg" />

Peter C. As I was about to do this, a friendly gentleman wandered over and introduced himself he was a former Chapter President and manager of the most exclusive club in the area.

In all honesty, I haven’t come close to finding the perfect balance in my life, I haven’t found a magical formula to fix all the bumps in the road but I’m still trying, still listening and thanks to CMAA: still learning!

I respectfully ask you to support my continued service as a national director. Our association is strong because of its remarkable membership. I promise to always keep listening and keep learning from you because, after all, we are all the leaders we have been waiting for!

download copy - pdf

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://davies4director.blogspot.com/2009/09/peter-c-davies-ccm-forum.html' title='Peter C. Following an education at Bishop’s Stortford College I attended London’s Central School of Speech and Drama. At drama school I dreamed of a lifetime career as an actor on stage and screen – little did I know that my training as an actor would one day serve me in a completely different way to the one I had in mind – the distinctive drama of the private club experience!

Life after school was a voyage of discovery. Over the years I worked as a London based actor, a promotions manager for RCA Records, a personal manager for cult rock star Iggy Pop and then a return to acting in New York where work as a waiter was more easy to come by than work as an actor.

During this actor/waiter period I moved from New York to Cincinnati to be close to my 6-year old son Christian. After a few years of my usual routine of working in the theatre whenever I could and supporting myself by working in restaurants, I stepped into a country club for the first time in my life and successfully interviewed for a dining room captain position. I quickly felt at home in the private club atmosphere and enjoyed the contrast to restaurant work; members took a friendly interest in the club staff, it was fun to serve dinner one night and stage a wedding the next. It felt good to work in a magical place with its beautiful clubhouse, immaculately maintained golf course and grounds and general sense of family and celebration.

I embraced opportunities for promotion and after a few years became the club’s food & beverage director and, more importantly, a member of CMAA. I was a member of the Ohio Valley Chapter and I will never forget my experience at my first meeting. I knew no one and was standing next to the swimming pool at the host club, nibbling on a shrimp and giving serious consideration to slipping away and going home. As I was about to do this, a friendly gentleman wandered over and introduced himself he was a former Chapter President and manager of the most exclusive club in the area. He made me feel welcome, asked me about myself and explained that the value of CMAA would best be found by getting involved. He introduced me to other managers and insisted I sat with him and his wife for dinner.

I took that friendly manager’s advice and quickly became involved in CMAA. I became a director of the Ohio Valley Chapter where I served as Cincinnati District Chair, two terms as Education Chair and then terms as Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President and Chapter President. I have been honored to serve on many national committees and I am currently serving on the National Board of Directors. I am also a member of the CMAA Wine Society.

I was very proud to achieve my CCM in 2006 and Honor Society in 2009. I believe that my career path is a direct result of the education available from CMAA and after 8 years as general manager of Heritage Club in Cincinnati, I was fortunate enough to relocate to one of the most beautiful places on earth, Cape Cod, Massachusetts where I am somewhat awed to be the general manager for one of the great clubs of New England; the Wianno Club.

My personal journey with CMAA has bonded me to the association in such a way that I have a natural desire to serve the association and its membership. Times are changing fast and we need our association more than ever to help us find ways to embrace the opportunities of challenge and change so we can transform them into triumphs for our clubs and for our own careers. The association benefits from the ability of its directors to listen and learn from the membership. We are a grass roots organization that is supported by our wonderful chapters around the country. I have the good fortune of membership on the great Chapters of New England and the Ohio Valley and understand this well. As a director, I must continue to do all I can to make certain that the membership’s voice is clearly heard at the national level.

The lonely shrimp nibbling experience at my first Chapter meeting happened many years ago but I feel a deep gratitude to that friendly manager who reached out and encouraged me to get involved. I have never forgotten the experience and, whenever I am at a CMAA event, I always keep a watchful eye for anyone who looks in need of a warm welcome or a friendly word. As a CMAA leader, I always use every possible opportunity to reach out, listen and encourage because I have never forgotten how someone reached out to me and sealed my involvement with the association.

This year, Shelly and I will celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary and count our many blessings – especially our children – Christian now 24 and pursuing an acting career in New York, Harker who is in 1st Grade and Clementine who is in pre-school. I am so thankful for the love and support of my family – nothing would exist without them. Life balance is a frequent topic of conversation for club managers, a frequent topic for association seminars and perhaps one of the most difficult things to achieve in a profession that often places many demands on our lives. As with many things in life, I haven’t found the perfect balance in life, I haven’t found a magical formula to fix all the bumps in the road but I’m still trying, still listening and thanks to CMAA: still learning!

Please help my election efforts for 2010 – I promise to keep listening and keep learning from you.

download copy pdf

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://davies4director.blogspot.com/2009/08/peter-c-davies-ccm-personal-story_15.html' title='Peter C.
